Additional information: engagement ring. In Western cultures in particular, an engagement ring indicates that the wearer is engaged. In the United Kingdom and North America, engagement rings are traditionally reserved for women, and may be adorned with precious stones. In other cultures, men and women generally wear matching, sometimes simple, rings. In some cultures, engagement rings are also used as Wedding bands.
Traditionally, the engagement ring is given by a man to his future wife when proposing or immediately after her acceptance. It constitutes a formal agreement to marry. Rings can be purchased by the man, by the couple together, or by each partner for the other.
In North America and the United Kingdom, it is worn on the left ring finger, while in Poland and Ukraine, it is customary to wear it on the right hand. In Germany, it is worn on the left hand during engagement, but on the right hand during marriage. Similar traditions date back to antiquity, tracing back to an ancient usage that designated the left hand's ring finger as containing the vena amoris, or "vein of love."
Engagement rings were used in Roman times, but their return to the West only occurred in the 13th century. The first documented use of a diamond ring to symbolize engagement was by Archduke Maximilian of Austria at the imperial court of Vienna in 1477, at his engagement to Mary of Burgundy.
In the 20th century, if he could afford it, the Western groom would privately choose and buy an engagement ring, which he would then offer to his future wife when proposing. More recently, couples frequently choose their engagement ring together. (according to Wikipedia)
Kutchinsky - The Kutchinsky jewelry house was founded in London in 1890. Originally from Poland, where they had been jewelers for centuries (they were also jewelers at the court of Louis of Bavaria), the Kutchinsky family were pioneers in the use of platinum in fine jewelry, and their Commercial Road shop quickly became famous among lovers of refined jewelry. At the end of the 1950s, they moved their business to Knightsbridge, London (where there is still a Kutchinsky boutique, although it has been taken over by Moussaieff, another renowned high-quality jeweler). Kutchinsky is still renowned for the quality of its jewelry and the use of precious stones.
